Concert featuring cellist Ashley Bathgate and pianist Nancy Hull
The Bard Music Program presents a community chamber concert featuring cellist Ashley Bathgate and pianist Nancy Hull on Sunday, April 21. The program, free and open to the public, will be held in Blum Hall on the Bard College Campus at 3:00 p.m.
The concert will open with Bathgate's performance of Bach's Suite No. 4 in E-flat Major, BWV 1010. Bathgate and Hull will then perform Beethoven's Sonata in C Major, Op. 102, No. 1, and Shostakovich's Sonata in D Minor, Op. 40.
"Bathgate has established herself as a rising star of the instrument [cello]," said Times Union classical music critic Ron Emery of her recent performance with the Empire Youth Orchestra. Bathgate began private studies of the cello in 1997 with the late Rudolf Doblin. In May of 1999 she began studying with Ann Alton of The Juilliard School's precollege program. Since 2001, she studies with Luis Garcia-Renart, professor of music at Bard College and lecturer at Vassar College. Garcia-Renart is also the artistic director of the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, which recently featured Bathgate in performances of Schumann's Cello Concerto. Bathgate is the principal cellist of the Empire State Youth Orchestra and a two-time recipient of its Lois Lyman Concerto Competition. She was also the guest soloist in a young artists' concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center's Chamber Music Festival, directed by Chantal Juillet. A high honor student at Saratoga Springs High School, Bathgate will graduate with the class of 2002.
Pianist Nancy Hull is a summa cum laude graduate of the Crane School of Music. A stylistically versatile performer, Hull is equally at ease with musical theater, jazz standards, and contemporary gospel, as well as classical music. She is the pianist for the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Saratoga Chamber Singers, and Albany Pro Musica, with whom she has recorded. Hull was also a featured artist in the Troy Music Hall's Music at Noon concert series. She has served as a musical director, pianist, conductor, and vocal coach for the New York State Theater Institute, and is the pianist and artistic director of the newly formed Ensemble Selah. Hull is also minister of music at Grace Convenant Church in Ravena, New York.
