Blues Music: the 12 bar blues song

Although Blues music has no single fixed song structure the 12 bar blues is the most popular form of blues and is the inspiration for almost all blues music. So how do you play a 12 bar blues, which chords do you use, what type of chords do you play? Let's take a look!

A 12 bar blues song uses, surprise surprise... 12 bars. If you look at blues sheet music and blues tabs you will find that it works for every 12 bar blues song and most blues music. But the 12 bar chords structure may be different in every song. In reality most songs use a very similar structure, and only use 1 or 2 bar variations. If you learn the basic 12 bar structure you will be able to write your own blues, and with a little knowledge of music theory you can even start playing and improvising with the 12 bar blues. Let's start with some basic notation method and look at how this music theory works with a standard or classic blues in C.

Well first of all do this. Start off with 4 bars of choards with C then 2 chords of F then again 2 chords of C. Then 1 chord of G then 1 chord of F then 2 chords of C

Blues is easy to write about. millions of african slaves were brought to america by american slave traders in the 19th century. the fusion of african music and european music is how blues came about. the slaves would sing sad songs of love, life, drugs and use the songs as a means of communication as they were not allowed to talk. maybe don't type in blues type in blues artists such as charles mingus.
