Universal Acquires MP3.com

Vivendi Universal, the world's largest record company conglomerate and home to artists ranging from Eminem to Sheryl Crow, purchased MP3.com on Sunday in a $372 million cash and stock transaction.

MP3.com will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Vivendi Universal

MP3.com will no longer be a public company effective at the time of the closing of the merger.

MP3.com will remain an independent promoter and distributor of music for all independent artists and record labels.

The acquisition comes six months after Vivendi Universal reached a settlement with MP3.com, after the latter lost a case filed against it by the five major record companies the previous summer. Universal was the last of the majors to settle with MP3.com.
