Writing Bass Lines for Dance Tracks

Writing a good bass line can literally take just a few minutes. But what makes a bass line any good? And how can you write one?

In general a good bass line is a bass line that fits the song, improves the rhythm feel and sometimes is “catchy”, just like the melody.

In Dance and Techno music this is even more important because the rhythm and bass determine the overall feel of the song much more than in other music styles like rock, pop, jazz and blues where guitar, horns, piano and other instruments play important rhythm parts.

Let's start with a basic dance rhythm and look at different bass rhythm types, some music theory and some examples.
