Pro Tools Receives Technical Grammy, Company Wins Award for its Flagship Digital Audio Rec
Palo Alto, CA - Digidesign, a division of Avid Technology, Inc. , has received the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences 2001 Technical Grammy Award for its Pro Tools¨ digital audio workstation. Both Digidesign and Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar and multitrack tape recording, were presented awards on Tuesday night in conjunction with the 43rd Annual Grammy® Awards ceremony, which aired nationally last night on CBS.
"The technical and creative innovations and contributions of Les Paul and the inventiveness of Digidesign's Pro Tools system are the towering achievements of true visionaries,'' said Michael Greene, president and CEO of the Recording Academy. "The products of their inspiration and dedication to their craft have revolutionized the recording industry."
Founded in 1985 by Peter Gotcher and Evan Brooks, Digidesign grew up with the PC revolution, changing the way music is produced with its computer-based tools for recording, editing and mixing digital audio. The era of the Pro Tools digital audio workstation began in 1991, and in just ten years, the product has evolved into a comprehensive platform for professional music, film and television production. The Pro Tools system is now used by more industry professionals than any other digital audio workstation of its kind.
"We're very honored to receive this Technical Grammy. As a 15-year-old company, we've accomplished a lot,'' said David Froker, general manager of Digidesign. "We're changing the way audio is produced in the entertainment business. We're also changing the way musicians work, with our home studio products and our Internet-based services.'' The company's entry-level version of Pro Tools, which sells for less than $1,000, makes it possible for people to make music at home and take it directly to a professional studio. Using the Digidesign Production Network™, the company's new Internet initiative, artists and engineers all over the world will be able to collaborate online.
The Technical Grammy adds to the list of technical distinctions awarded to Avid in recent years. Avid was honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with a Technical Oscar¨ for its contribution to the film industry in 1999 and by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with an Emmy¨ award for its technical achievements in the broadcast television industry in 2000.
