how to use a Microphone

In previous articles we looked at some of the basics in recording. In this one we are going to go into some practical examples.

You could study every detail of microphones, and you should, but the ear and experience are two essential tools in recording.

To get you started recording better tracks we are going to discuss a few basic concepts of microphones. The first thing you should know about a microphone is that it is not a human ear. The best way to find out how a microphone really works is to put on a closed headphone, so your ears only hear the sound from the microphone and not any of the real sound in the room. You can also have somebody in another room aiming the microphone in different directions and you sitting in a control room (or other place.)
Now when you aim the microphone at an object you can hear the sound. Move it closer to the sound source and further away. Some microphones will sound about the same when you come closer, just a little louder. Other microphones will however sound differently. Some will have much more bass in it. Especially when you are working close to a sound source this effect can be very strong.

The dynamic mic is sometimes also called a moving coil mic. This name comes from the way the microphone works. It uses a diaphragm that moves with sound pressure differences.

Microphone types: the Shotgun Microphone
A shotgun microphone is a very directional microphone. Unlike a normal microphone which normally picks up too many other sounds the shotgun microphone is used to pick up distant sound sources.

Microphone Types: the Condenser Mic or Electret Microphones
A condenser or capacitor microphone is more sensitive than the dynamic microphones. It uses a lightweight membrane and a fixed plate that act as the opposite sides of a capacitor.

Microphone Figure 8 Frequency Response
The figure 8 pattern is a bi-directional microphone pattern. It has two equal lobes 180 degrees apart on the front of the microphone and on the back.

Microphone Preamp
A mircophone preamp is a preamplifier that powers the microphone and amplifies the picked up sound to line level that can either be mixed, amplified or recorded by a soundcard.
