Aubrey Nunn (Faithless/Dido) Picks TL Audio Ivory 5052 Stereo Valve
Aubrey Nunn - bassist with Faithless, and part of Dido's studio band and writing team - has recently expanded his arsenal of TL Audio gear by investing in an Ivory 5052 Stereo Valve Processor for his private London studio. This augments the FAT-1 & FAT-2 products that already form an integral part of Aubrey's recording set-up, and which were used on the current Dido "Life For Rent" album in Aubrey's role as writer/producer.
"I tend to compress everything to some degree when tracking, so I can get some thickness and depth at source. This is why I'm keen on using a valve front end, so I can introduce a controllable amount of valve character on the way in. And now with the 5052 in my setup I have the ability to use valve processing on my stereo mix as well."
Aubrey's studio is centred around a Mac system running Logic & Powercore, and with a variety of different sounding rooms he is able to set up vocals, acoustic guitar or double bass in any room almost instantly:
"TL Audio is really all about creating character in sound, and for me there is nothing like miking up acoustic instruments and using valve technology to create something real and characterful. I really like the way as a company TL Audio have built in the notion of slightly abusing the units to get the best out of them - that really appeals to me! Originally I used to track everything through a basic analogue mixer and thought everything sounded fine - it was only by actually plugging TL Audio boxes in that I became acutely aware of how much better things can sound."
