Microphone Types

Using the right type of microphone for the right conditions, voice or instrument is essential. The main difference between microphones is the way they pick up frequency and how they pick up sound. There are two basic things you need to know. Is the microphone directional and what is the frequency pattern. For a bass drum you probably want a different microphone compared to a high crash.

There are three basic microphone types.

1) Dynamic or moving coil
2) Condenser or electret
3) Ribbon.
