Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas at Bard
The Music and Theater Programs at Bard College will present a production of Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday, April 13, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. The performances, free and open to the public, will be in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents on the Bard College Campus.
Dido and Aeneas was composed in 1689 and is considered the first English opera. The performance at Bard is directed by Jean Wagner, visiting assistant professor of theater; under the musical direction of Arthur Burrows, associate professor of music; and conducted by James Bagwell, assistant professor of music and choral director at Bard.
The seven principals of the opera are portrayed by Bard students—Rebecca Schob as Dido, Alyson Voynick as the Sorceress, Brian Wolf as Aeneas, Tahlia Harbour as Belinda, Leslie Durum as Second Woman, Laramie Wilcox as First Witch, Ethan Bremner as The Sailor, and Bjorn Quenemoen as The Spirit. In addition, there will be a chorus composed of students and an orchestra with harpsichordist Frederick Hammond, Irma Brandeis Professor of Romance Culture and Music History at Bard.
