Impedance: basics high impedance and low impedance
Impedance is sometimes defined as “The total passive opposition offered to the flow of electric current”
When using recording and PA equipment you need to look at the impedance of microphones, guitars, basses, effect units and even turntables. Most instrument/microphone type gear operates at microphone type levels, high impedance. Effect processors usually run at line level, low impedance. Gear that has high impedance needs a preamp to bring the level up to line level so it can be fed into an amplifier, effect processor or mixer.
In general a high impedance output will not work with a low impedance input.
Examples of high impedance outputs: Guitar output Microphone output Bass guitar output
Examples of low impedance inputs: Inputs of an amplifier Input on a multi-effect processor
A low impedance output will work with a high impedance input.
Examples of low impedance outputs: Outputs of a CD player Outputs of a multi effect processor.
Examples of high impedance inputs: Microphone input on a mixer Microphone input on a microphone preamplifier Guitar input on a direct box or guitar amp.
