vocal ensemble ArtSong Nouveau at Bard"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is the title of the concert performance by the vocal ensemble ArtSong Nouveau on Wednesday, April 10, at Bard College. The program, presented by The Bard Center, begins at 7:00 p.m. in Bard Hall and is free and open to the public.ArtSong Nouveau cuts across musical genres, performing works from Leonard Bernstein to Fats Waller to the Grateful Dead. Their program at Bard will include renditions of Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man," Joni Mitchell's "Blue," Tori Amos's "Silent All These Years," Freddy Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody," Kurt Weill's "Alabama Song" and "Moritat von Mackie Messer" from Threepenny Opera,Gustav Mahler's "Um Mitternacht," and Sting's "Moon Over Bourbon Street," among others. The ensemble comprises internationally acclaimed musicians who seek to renew and expand the concept of the art song and help develop the audiences of the future. Performers include soprano Amy Wagar, tenor and artistic director David Blackburn, lyric baritone Lawrence Cummings, mezzo-soprano Tara Venditti, and pianists Emily W. Upham (also artistic director) and Richard Gordon (professor of psychology at Bard). With a focus on the multicultural American contribution to the art song and on innovative programming, ArtSong Nouveau brings its performances to formal concert halls, as well as intimate and nontraditional spaces. The group strives to reach audiences that would not normally be enriched by such repertoire and that may be surprised to discover their individual connection to this art form.
