Native Instruments and CNMAT Announce Open Sound Control (OSC) in REAKTOR 3.0
Native Instruments and UC Berkeley's Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) have joined forces to promote the Open Sound Control (OSC) protocol and to bring the benefits of OSC to computer-based musicians around the world.
Daniel Haver, CEO of Native Instruments: "The integration of OSC into REAKTOR is our first step towards network-based communication. In the future, interaction between music software applications will be very powerful and intuitive at the same time."
"OSC's url-style syntax provides the musician with a simple and familiar cognitive model for musical expression," says David Wessel, CNMAT's Director. "There's no reason for musicians to still be limited by MIDI," says Matt Wright, CNMAT's Musical Applications Programmer. "MIDI is fine for plugging a keyboard into a computer, but terrible for letting programs talk to each other. Open Sound Control leverages higher-bandwidth networking to provide features that make music-making more convenient, precise, and fun."
Open Sound Control (OSC) OSC is an open, network-independent protocol developed for communication among computers, sound synthesizers, and other multimedia devices. Compared to MIDI, OSC provides increased reliability, greater user convenience, and more reactive musical control. Open Sound Control is useful in any situation where multiple music applications have to work together on the same computer or on networked computers. While MIDI only has the parameters defined in the standard (note on/off, pitch bend, control change, etc.), OSC lets each program have its own symbolic, hierarchical, and dynamic address space. OSC can be used with any networking technology, including TCP/IP based LANs and the internet. OSC's time tags and bundles of messages provide for exact timing of musical results even if the network has latency and jitter. OSC supports a variety of argument types which will be successively integrated into future releases of REAKTOR.
Application areas The OSC implementation of REAKTOR allows an easy setup of ˇ Internet-based collaborative international music making ˇ Sound installations with dozens of computers in a single room coordinating with each other ˇ Coordinating synthesis between two (or more) computers to increase the total processing power ˇ Communication between music software applications within a single computer.
