Guinness World Record: 'longest performance by a band/group'Eight drummers from the Cambridge (Ohio) High School Drumline (‘Thunderline’) have broken the Guinness World Record for longest continuous performance by a group by drumming continuously for 24 hours and 15 minutes. Their successful attempt was made on December 29th and 30th, 2000, as part of the section’s drum-a-thon fundraising event.In an effort to fund new percussion equipment for their school instrumental program, nine members of Thunderline sat down at noon on December 29th and proceeded to play their way through 74 different tunes and exercises, which were then repeated every four hours. Guinness guidelines required a 15-minute break after every eight hours and allowed a 30 second break between each performance piece. Otherwise, playing was continuous and was completed at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday the 30th of December. One member of the drumline had to drop out at approximately 7:15 am on Saturday as he ‘answered natures call.’ These dedicated percussionists endured this event in hopes of funding new instruments at their school. It is an all-too-familiar tale of budget cuts directly affecting the Arts to the point of causing academic harm. After several years of receiving no funds for instrument purchases, as well as the theft of several stands and other percussion instruments, percussionists at Cambridge High School were faced with a nightmare. Basic instruments like a concert bass drum, vibraphone, xylophone, gong, marching drums, concert toms and assorted hand percussion were either missing, broken beyond repair, or nearly so. The booster organization was already stretched to the maximum just maintaining other instrument repairs and purchasing uniforms. Appeals to the administration were ignored. So these percussionists, ages 14 to 18, stepped up and answered the call! They promoted the event, went door-to-door soliciting pledges and donations, and then endured over 24 hours of physical and mental sacrifice. With almost $6,000 in donations collected so far they have not yet reached halfway to what is needed, but it is a good start. Other resources are being explored that will, hopefully, provide the remainder of what is need to help restore the percussion section to what it once was. Drum companies that were part of the event include Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Promark Drumsticks and Remo Drumheads. In addition over 120 local individuals and businesses offered their support before, during or after the event.
