Robbie Williams DVD re-mixed in 5.1 with System 6000
London, UK: Riding on the success of the latest two Robbie Williams albums, producer Steve Power recently re-mixed the live Slane Castle concert for DVD 5.1 using TC Electronic's new System 6000 Multi-channel Platform at London's Metropolis Studios. Scheduled to arrive in the shops just before Christmas, the new DVD will also feature 5.1 mixes of the recent hit single 'Rock DJ' and a special bonus track, 'Dance With the Devil'. Steve Power explains: "I choose the System 6000 because it is the only thing that does 5.1 compression and reverb. The ability to work at 96k was also an added advantage. I used TC's 5.1 Concert Hall reverb to give the listener the feeling that they were actually in the middle of the crowd at the concert. The sound was great, but then, I think all TC gear is always brilliant."
Steve used the flexible routing system to run the 5.1 Reverb via the analogue I/Os back into the aux. returns of the SSL9000B, whilst the dynamics processor was routed simultaneously via the System 6000's AES/EBU I/Os.

"I already own a Finalizer 96K so switching over to the 5.1 multi-band dynamics package on the System 6000 was easy", he adds. "I simply set it up and left it to do its job. I also took the opportunity to experiment with the MS compression on the 6000, which was great. I understand that the MS processing is used a lot more in the States than here in the UK. I reckon that TC will sell a lot of 6000s based on this feature alone." Steve continues: "As far as 5.1 music is concerned, my main worry is not knowing what systems people will be listening back on. People are currently buying really cheap systems from places like ASDA for their home cinema. If you don't know what frequencies are going on in the rear surround speakers when you mix, it could create all sorts of problems You've got to have a decent, full range, 5.1 speaker system to mix with.
I look forward to the moment when 5.1 for music becomes more standardized because there is a lot of potential. After mixing the Robbie Williams concert, I was really disappointed at having to go back to just stereo..."
