To better equip its family of retail partners in the United States and Canada, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) has recently launched an innovative dealer information website. With instant access to information such as product availability, open orders, recent shipments, or even to place an order on-line, retailers who sign up for the new website have the tools to better service their customers right there in the store. "This website opens up so many possibilities for the retailer," says Fender's Larry Moudy, who helped design the system. "A lot of the phone calls that we get from dealers are concerning orders for their customers. Obviously, peak retail hours are generally weekends and evenings during the week, hours when we are not at our telephones." "With this level of support on-line," adds Moudy, "dealers have access to information 24 hours a day. On top of that, any authorized Fender dealer can simply sign up for the site." The new dealer information website features a security function like no other manufacturer site available. A retail store owner or manager becomes the system's administrator and simply determines which employees will have access to the five different levels of information offered on the site. Once an employee has been assigned a password, his or her access is limited to their superior's discretion. A sales clerk on the floor, for example, may want to check on an order's status for a customer. By logging onto the website, the sales clerk can check on the product availability or if the product has recently been shipped, which they can tell the customer right there. However, a store owner may want to allow access to accounting history or the ability place an order only to key personnel. Additionally, the site now features an purchase history function that allows dealers to track exactly what they have purchased for the previous 24 months. Says Moudy, "This takes a lot the forecasting burden off of the dealer, who can go into the system and find out what's been purchased at a particular time of year and the quantities of each product." Since its launch, the FMIC dealer information website has been welcomed by its retailers as a means of direct communication with the company.
