Sonorus and 4Front Support Open Sound System for Linux
New York, NY - Sonorus, Inc., makers of the award winning STUDI/O PC - ADAT interface, and 4Front Technologies, the leaders in development of digital audio solutions for the UNIX and Linux operating systems, have announced support for the STUDI/O card in 4Front's Open Sound System for Linux. OSS has been recognized as the de-facto audio architecture for UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems. Linux ships with OSS/Free, a GPL'ed version of the OSS sound drivers. The STUDI/O - OSS combination brings STUDI/O's versatility and 24-bit quality to the UNIX and Linux world. UNIX/Linux users can now perform a variety of tasks, including streaming digital audio (Real Audio, MP3 Audio, etc.) directly from studio equipment to the Internet using live encoding capabilities; professional audio editing using direct-to-disk, full duplex, multi-track editing applications such as SLAB, SND, and MultiTrack; transferring data to/from DAT tapes, 8 channel Alesis ADAT-compatible devices, or any devices having optical S/PDIF connectors; achieving very high quality playback and recording. STUDI/O allows recording engineers and home studio owners to input/output 16 channels of digital audio in parallel from the PC to a pair of Alesis ADATs using standard fiber-optic cables. STUDI/O includes two 8-channel Alesis ADAT optical interfaces and an 18-bit stereo analog monitor output. For mastering applications, one or both ADAT interfaces can be software-configured for optical SPDIF input and/or output, including sample rate conversion, for connection to DAT machines or high-performance converters. With the addition of Word Clock in & out, ADAT timecode input and MIDI timecode input via Sonorus' Sync Backplate, STUDI/O can be synchronized within a professional digital studio environment to a master clock generator. STUDI/O can then also be utilized as the master clock generator via Word Clock out, sending its high quality clock to the Alesis BRC or other devices. With ADAT timecode input and the supplied tray application, any Windows audio application can perform sample accurate playback and recording. Additionally, frame-accurate punch-ins for programs that synch to MIDI timecode are now possible via the MIDI driver. 4Front's Open Sound System has been licensed by SCO, and is endorsed by major UNIX developers including Sun Microsystems, BSD, Inc., Corel Computer, WindRiver Systems and Lynx RealTime. Free UNIX operating systems including FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD also contain OSS-compatible sound drivers. 4Front's digital audio customers range from major universities including Stanford (CCRMA), MIT (Media Lab), Cornell, Oxford, Cambridge and others, to major companies including IBM, SUN, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, Sony, Philips, Lucas Film THX, and Dolby.
