MP3 creator develops new 3D audio technology
Karlheinz Brandenburg, creator of the MP3 audio technology and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Media Technology, and his team are currently working on a new 3D audio technology which will allow audio to be placed anywhere inside or outside of the room.
The best existing surround sound speakers can also do this buy only for a people in the center of the room. The new 3D sound system called the Losono system would create the same realistic illusion for everyone in the room.
Not, yet, at a theater near you. Fraunhofer is providing licenses to the technology itself for between $10,000 and $15,000. But developers also need powerful computing hardware and the extremely expensive array of speakers that can ring the production space. You are first likely to hear this technology at work in theme parks. In the next year the technology will find it's way into home theatre systems.
