PA system basics: amp, speakers, mixer and a microphone

A basic PA system should not be difficult to set up. It should not cause any trouble and it should get the job done. It’s that simple. But in reality most live sound engineers and performing musicians don’t know how to keep it simple, or are making things more complex because they believe it will make the sound better.

In this first part of basic PA Systems we’ll take a look at a simple system and how the basics work. Not because you will always want to set up such a basic PA system, but because most of the basics apply to most live sound setups, the easy jobs and the more difficult ones. Let’s look at how you would/could set up a PA system in a small club/bar for a small band. What we need:

- 8 channel mixer
- 2 speakers
- power amp
- a few microphones
- a bunch of cables.
