Advanced Hi Hat Rock Drum Rhythms 1
The hihat is the part of the drum that is mainly used to help the flow of the rhythm or groove. In rock music the hihat usually plays straight 4ths, 8ths and even 16ths in funky, fast or progressive rock. But this doesn't mean that is all you can do as a rock drummer. The best rock rhythms use the straight 4ths or 8ths and add subtle differences to the main rhythm.
Let's start with this next simple exercise. If you look at the drum tab you will immediately recognize the standard drum rhythm and see how the closed hihat is used to play the straight 8ths, the open hihat is used to spice up the rhythm. In most pop and rock drum rhythms this is also a perfect example of a fill at the end of the 2nd or 4th bar of a drum rhythm.
