Although some bass players don't even realize it any bass player plays chords on their bass. Well, almost any bass player. In some music style the bassist hardly plays anything or just plays the same note over and over again.
In blues chords are very important. Especially when other instruments play fills or solos and the bass has to create the whole rhythm.
