Sonny Emory and Billy Cobham Signature Snare drums

In collaboration with drum greats Sonny Emory and Billy Cobham, Yamaha Drums has developed two signature snare drum models which will debut at Winter NAMM 2000.

The Sonny Emory WSD-1455SE and Billy Cobham ASD-1460BC each have unique characteristics that echo the attributes and styles of their namesakes. Both models are anticipated additions to the signature line of Yamaha snare drum products, and will be available in April, 2000.

"Working closely with Sonny and Billy, Yamaha has developed two snare drums that have distinctive and unique voices," states David Jewell, drum product manager, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "The Sonny Emory model is the obvious choice for a drummer who wants the warmth of a wood shell and the cut of a steel shell. If someone is looking for an articulate, sensitive instrument with the timbre of wood hoops, the Billy Cobham signature snare is the one."

The 14"x 5 1/2" Sonny Emory model features an 8-ply, 10mm all-Beech shell that has unique, rare grain and vintage finish. The combination of this shell’s thickness and timbre provides a very defined attack. The zinc die-cast, 10-hole hoops provide superb rim shots and the 25-strand snares offer the utmost in sensitivity.

The 14" x 6" Billy Cobham snare features a 6-ply, 6mm all-Maple shell and chrome Absolute lugs. An outstanding feature is the vintage wood hoops, which provide a solid cross stick. Hard, high-carbon 20-strand snares extend beyond the edge of the drum, giving the ASD0-1460BC an extremely dynamic response. Billy Cobham snare drum models are available in silver sparkle and solid black finishes.

"Yamaha is proud to be associated with drum greats like Billy Cobham and Sonny Emory," notes Jerry Andreas, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums. "Professional drummers will find that either of these products will fit their needs, whatever the genre."

Sonny Emory holds the titles of writer, teacher and performer. He is known throughtout the worlds of jazz, R&B, rock and funk, performing with a virtual "who’s who" in pop and jazz that includes Stanley Clarke, Al Jarreau, Paula Abdul and Earth, Wind and Fire. He is currently on tour with Bette Midler. His solid and energetic style reflects his many influences, and can presently be heard in his latest project, Hypnofunk.

Billy Cobham’s career spans the jazz, rock, soul and fusion genres. Performing and recording with Horace Silver, Ron Carter and Miles Davis, he is perhaps best known for helping to shape the distinctive sound of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. His playing style has been described as heavy and steady, yet extremely dynamic.
