Yamaha enhances hipgig line with Al Foster signature model
Latest Entry Is Fitting Tribute to Jazz Legend. NASHVILLE–Yamaha Drums strengthens its successful, portable HipGig line with the debut of the Al Foster HipGig Sr. at Summer NAMM 2000. This functional, professional signature drum kit, named for the Jazz drummer extraordinaire, carries on the Yamaha HipGig tradition with incredible sounding drums and the portability that has made the HipGig popular with the gigging musician. The Al Foster set features an 18-in. diameter by 22-in. bass drum with Yamaha’s distinctive floating bass drum system and newly designed bass drum lift, a dynamic pair of toms (12 x 6 1/4-in. rack and 14 x 8 1/4-in. floor) and crisp 13 x 5-in. snare drum. Mounting hardware for the toms and snare, drum throne, hi-hat stand, bass drum pedal and two cymbal stands is included. Constructed of durable, high-quality 7-ply birch and exotic Philippine Mahogany, the set is available in elegant Jaguar, White Marine Pearl and Gold Marine Pearl finishes. The HipGig Sr.’s snare and toms are equipped with Remo Coated Ambassador heads while the bass drum comes with Renaissance PowerStroke heads. "The HipGig Sr. has truly been designed for gigging drummers," notes Jerry Andreas, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums. "It’s a pleasure to have both an incredible, versatile kit and an association with an artist like Al Foster." No drum set on the market matches the convenience or portability of the HipGig. The entire kit is packaged into two soft-side gig bags: the snare and toms store inside the bass drum during transport and mount to the bass drum at the gig; the hi-hat, throne and cymbal stands are free-standing. "It can be used for virtually every style of music, be it Jazz, Rock, Funk, Fusion or even Pop, with its solid-sounding kick and snare. Best of all, it can go anywhere." Al Foster is known in the realms of Jazz, Rock and Fusion for his infectious, heavy beat and tight, confident groove. As a mainstay of the Miles Davis Band throughout the 1980’s, Foster added his distinctive touch to the trumpet legend’s ground-breaking albums that included On The Corner and Dark Magus. His roster also includes, among others, work with Jazz greats McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Blue Mitchell and Mark Whitfield.
