Yamaha unveils world's first Bamboo snare drums
News date: 20001224 Posted by: Musiciansnews.com

Yamaha Drums is proud to announce a breakthrough in drum construction with the introduction of two environmentally-friendly snare drum models at Winter NAMM 2000. Crafted from sturdy 6mm, 6-ply Bamboo, these instruments produce a unique, warm sound and have a beautiful, natural appearance. Bamboo grows much faster than traditional hardwoods, and can easily be replenished. The BMSD-1455BB and BMSD-1465BB snare drums will be available in May, 2000.

"With the Bamboo snare drum models, Yamaha has created traditional, yet timely, products," states Jerry Andreas, drum marketing manager, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "They demonstrate corporate responsibility in finding alternative materials that are environmentally friendly."

Bamboo has been utilized for centuries in Asia to make traditional musical instruments. Craftsmen have long appreciated its crisp, warm, resonant sound quality. Its straight grain and warp resistance makes it extremely durable. Yamaha’s patented construction process is similar to that used for its unique Bamboo guitars, using three- to five-year-old plants, plus a combination of multi-layering and laminating.

Both models include 10-lug, 2.3mm steel DynaHoops, a 20-strand hard carbon snare, and chrome Absolute-style lugs. The natural shell finishes of the 14" x 5" BMSD-1455BB and 14" x 6 1/2" BMS-1465BB will maintain their characteristic timbre and become richer looking with age.

"These drums sound amazing, and no manufacturer has used Bamboo before," notes David Jewell, product manager, Yamaha Drums. "They will certainly be attractive to customers looking for something that is both musically and ecologically appealing."
