Evans drumheads leads the rebirth of the drumhead industry
When Chick Evans first invented the polyester drumhead in 1956, he radically changed the drum industry for the better. After that seminal moment, drums could be played in the rain, in the snow, in different temperatures…animal skin was no longer necessary, nor were the expensive processes used to turn skin into drumheads.
Others would come along and take Chick’s idea, claiming it for their own, and the history of the polyester drumhead was warped and falsely revised over the years, but printed documentation clearly shows that the original idea was indisputably Chick’s. Still, the drawn-out arguments with imitators had taken their toll on the aging Chick, and he retired, leaving the company that bears his name in the hands of Bob Beals, who quietly made serious improvements to the line over the years. In 1995, when Bob sold the company to J. D’Addario & Company, Inc., the world’s largest musical string producer, he knew he was putting Evans in hands that would continue to make innovations to his products.
But even Bob himself didn’t foresee the fervor and enthusiasm that D’Addario would put into Evans. In the last few years, D’Addario has trimmed the line, added new products, and increased Evans market share worldwide to an estimated 35%. D’Addario streamlined and overhauled the drumhead manufacturing process by inventing water-cooled molding, creating a spray booth that made coating the heads absolutely precise, and developing color-coded box labels that made identifying heads and their sound qualities simple.
In the last year, a new automated gluing gantry has been installed to ensure the hoops are evenly filled with resin, and vacuum fixtures hold the film in place while the resin dries, so there’s no misalignment of the film. A new laser allows us to flawlessly cut film for Evans inventive Tri-Center Conga heads, as well as specialty-sized bass and timpani heads.
Overall, the entire Evans line of drumheads has become more consistent than any other heads in the industry, and Evans is quickly moving toward becoming the number one drumhead manufacturer in the world.
Part of the reason for this is that the new products that Evans has created are more than just variations on what’s already out there. The Power Center and Reverse Dot Power Center drumheads are a key example. Not content to just stick a central dot of polyester film on the heads, Evans researched dozens of different ways to provide the durability of a two-ply head with the sound of a single ply head. The answer? Perforate the dot before applying it, allowing the head to vibrate more naturally, producing a better sound. Then there’s the Tri-Center conga head, which followed the Power Center and was created using the same basic idea. The Tri-Center dot removes unwanted
overtones and adds weight to the center, dropping the fundamental frequency and producing more low end. The result is a synthetic conga head that sounds almost indistinguishable from skin.
Evans used the same mindset when stepping onto the marching field. First the company introduced the MX Marching Snare Drum System, rugged Aramid Fiber heads that offer a tuning and dynamic range formerly impossible. The second part of the system was the Marching Staccato Disk and the Marching X-Treme Patch. The Staccato Disk eliminates unwanted overtones, while the X-Treme Patch adheres to the top of the head, dividing it into distinct playing areas and giving one drumhead a previously unheard range of sounds.
The MX Marching Bass System followed, with a unique, adjustable tone-damping system that enables the articulation needed for marching applications: eight damping inserts, held in place by an internal flap, can actually be reconfigured to customize the level of muffling/articulation for each drum. Prestigious drum corps like The Phantom Regiment and the Bluecoats have wasted no time in switching to Evans.
Around the same time, Evans introduced orchestral heads for timpani and snare, heads that have a wide dynamic range and keep their pitch. Most recently, Evans expanded the line of accessories by developing a Magnetic Head Drum Key and a Bit Key for cordless screwdrivers and drills. The keys are drop forged for ultimate durability.
What’s next? Look for the EMAD (Externally Mounted Adjustable Damping) bass drumhead and the RGS (Resonance Gate System) Pad, which eliminates the need to use multiple pads to create different damping effects. Finally, there’s the AF Patch, made of Aramid Fiber, which offers maximum durability while preserving the natural feel of the drumhead.
Evans has been a drumhead innovator for the past 44 years, partly because we’ve focused only on drumheads and accessories. And in the process, we’ve made drumheads better.
