The Brown Indian Band has been formed by virtuoso jazz bassplayer Colin D'Cruz and features accomplished Indian classical musicians in concert with jazz musicians. Indian classical music is basically a lot like jazz in the sense that they both involve improvisation. Whereas Indian classical is linear and uses just one scale (raga) to improvise within a composition, jazz has a much broader palette for musical improvisations, where a composition can use multiple scales for improvisations through complex harmonies. Indian classical music however boasts of some of the world's most complex rhythm structures and quarter tones that takes it's sound far beyond the western twelve tone scale. The Brown Indian Band uses the best of both styles of musical improvisation to create an interesting and exciting new sound of indo-jazz fusion. The band has floating personnel that very often features reknowned visiting jazz musicians from all over the world. | |
