Hi everyone. I've been reading the posts on this site related to 'I want to be a singer', by I'm assuming, young and unexperienced, so called singers. You want to be a singer? Easy. Do what I did, and what also everybody else did, from Micheal Jackson, to Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, and any other singer worth their weight in sheet music. Here is my 10 step plan: 1. Learn how to read and write music. 2. Learn an instrument, preferably the keyboard, for its versatility. 3. Start writing your own songs. 4. Start or join a band. 5. Make a Demo. 6. Work as hard as you can with your songwriting, performance, recording, marketing, etc. Everything. 7. Take vocal lessons. 8. Go to school to learn to be a musician. 9. Get yourself on the Internet ie. YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, etc. 10. Do it yourself. Don't expect anyone is going to do it for you. If any steps above are too difficult, bad luck; you won't make it. And remember, it's all about the song. If it's great and it's got a beat, it's a winner, if not, forget it. Take a lesson from Lady Gaga. Read about her story on Wikipedia. You'll quickly realise that sitting on your arse doesn't accomplish anything. PS. Learn to spell. When it comes time to sign a contract you won't be able to read it. Who am I? Learned the piano, guitar, drums, recording, orchestration, and music arrangement. At 16 started my own band, with my own songs (100+) and started singing, playing small gigs, touring around the area, making demos, getting bios out, playing more gigs, doing support gigs for bands coming through town, self promoting myself and my band, and finally, just being happy about everything and not feeling desperate. Remember, create your own destiny. . . if someone else creates it for you, they own you. Where am I now? I tour regularly around Australia, SE Asia, Europe, and minorly in the USA. I write for film, TV, and have my own publishing company, selling songs to other artists all around the world. How did I get here? I got off my arse and worked bloody hard every day. I never took anything for granted and I learned from everybody I came across. Have a vision, have a goal, and never stop dreaming. That's what makes us musicians/singers/songwriters different from everyone else, so make a difference. Now go out there and do the same thing. Good luck! |
