what I've learned over the years Forums ğ | Post by: | Message: | Killswitch_engage ğmy Profile ğmy Messages ğmy Reviews |

There are going to be alot of strained vocal chords after reading this thread. I've been playing in heavy bands for close to 8 years now and here's my advice on becoming a better screamer and singer: 1)Warm up your damn voice! If you walk on stage and start belting out without warming up, even if your not screaming, you're going to start breaking up by the end of the first song. If you can sing a whole set without warming up and be fine after, you are probably a bad singer who sings like they talk. 2) Practice with a band! Nothing will make you a better musician faster than actually playing it with all elements there. You may be able to belt out just fine in your room when you're rocking out, but a whole lot changes when you're actually making the noise, and you can't use geoff rickley's vocal track as a guide. IT'S ALL YOU! 3) practice without a band too! Rock out on the drive to work, don't settle for hitting the same note on a lower octave. 4) Sing! You gotta walk before you can run. Learning to sing, and I mean sing well to the point that people come up to you after the show and compliment your voice, will really help you in developing the fundamentals for that natural flowing scream we all want. It will also help you learn to vary your pitch with screaming, you gotta have the piercing highs and the crushing lows. 5) Learn to play an instrument! In my eperience as a musician, I got 10 times better as a vocalist once I started playing guitar in a band. I was one of those kids who started out like "well, I can't play any instruments, so I guess I'm a singer" and that is the worst avenue to take. Having and understanding an instrument like the guitar will teach you alot about tone and pitch, also when you are playing nd singing, I always found it easier because I could "feel" the notes through the vibrations of my guitar, which made it way easier for me to find the right notes and to stay on key. If you're off key, you're embarassing your whole band. I now have moved back to being the front man and strictly vocals, but that's only because I know that I am ready to do so without disappointing, and it is an asset to the song writing process that I have an understanding as to what everyone else is doing in the band. 6) watch the zen of screaming! This video is a godsend for anyone looking to start some good pits. If you follow this dvd correctly, eventually you're gonna feel like you have two sets of lungs! I guarantee that you will see a vocalist you really respect talking about hopw much this training helped them. I know that I've just said alot of the same shit that everyone else did, but from what I gather from the posts is that alot of these people (not all of them) are just starting out in bands and need all the good advice they can get. The first time I had a girl after me because of being in a band, I couldn't even talk to her after the set because my voice was completely gone. DONT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!!! I never got to see her naked :(. But seriously, younger kids are making better and better music, and pushing themselves more and more right off the bat. If these bands' singers don't learn it right, they'll destroy their voices befor they get a chance to be heard. One last point NEVER, EVER USE THE "SCREAM THROUGH THE PAIN" TECHNIQUE!!!! It's just stupid, and a good way to hurt yourself | |
