Yamaha SGV Series takes guitar to the extreme

In response to the growing "alternative" music, extreme lifestyle and youth culture markets, Yamaha Corporation of America will debut the new SGV Series guitars at Winter NAMM 2000. Two new models–the SGV300 and SGV800–are designed for players that demand a sound, style and look that is a step outside the norm. The radical look of these instruments, combined with great-sounding pickups and a unique tremolo system, are a testament to Yamaha’s history of producing original electric guitars. The units will begin shipping in April 2000.

"Yamaha is excited to introduce a new guitar line that boasts an innovative and original design," states David Bergstrom, director of marketing, Combo Group, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "Our dealers will now be able to tap into an alternative consumer base that has really exploded."

The physical design of the SGV Series is based upon the vintage Yamaha SG line dating back to 1966. Yamaha was the first guitar manufacturer to introduce the angled "samurai" headstock shape, which has since become an often-imitated characteristic of electric guitars.

Both models feature a flat top, solid alder body; a 12-degree angled, color-matched headstock; chrome hardware; 3-position toggle switch; volume and tone control knobs; a fast, thin maple neck; roller bridge; and rosewood fingerboard. To complete the extreme look, players can choose from a variety of finishes that include Black Sparkle, Red Sparkle, Blue Sparkle, Pearl Green, Vintage Yellow and Red Metallic.

The SGV300 and SGV800 contain innovative electronics which are original Yamaha designs. An incredibly smooth, non-locking tremolo system, plus single coil Ferrite and Alnico V pickups produce a sound which is vintage, yet makes an ideal contribution to the music scene of the 21st century.

"The SGV300 and SGV800 offer today’s guitarist a radical alternative," notes Gary Cook, Guitar product manager. "With a wild-looking body design and innovative features, it’s an extreme instrument for the extreme guitarist."
