Yamaha Showcases Frank Gambale Signature AESFG Electric Guitar at Winter NAMM 2001
Yamaha Corporation of America, Guitar Products, will introduce the AESFG electric guitar at Winter NAMM 2001. Named for extraordinary guitarist Frank Gambale—best known for his dazzling work with various jazz/fusion artists, including Chick Corea's Elektric Band—the AESFG boasts a combination of original Yamaha design and the latest instrument technology.
The AESFG, an update on the classic AES solid body design, is a collaboration between Gambale and Yamaha Guitar Development (YGD), the company's R&D, artist relations and custom shop, which works in tandem with a variety of artists to develop new and innovative instruments. The unit will be available March 2001.
Original Yamaha designs, including a rear-mount neck joint system and rear-mounted pick-ups, improve accessibility and give the instrument a clean appearance. Other innovations include a floating Wilkinson VS100 bridge, set with an extremely low profile, and a spring claw screwed directly into the butt end of the 25.5-inch neck.
The proprietary Fretwave system, in which the first two frets are modified, is a simple way to temper tune the instrument for precise intonation throughout the Rosewood fingerboard. This system allows the instrument to stay in tune longer, giving the user more control over other aspects of playing and performance.
Gambale has been associated with the group Vital Information for 13 years. The group includes drummer Steve Smith, keyboardist Tom Coster and bassist Baron Browne. Even with many side projects and his own record label, Wombat Records, Gambale is equally excited about this current offering from Yamaha. "Having a signature instrument is a great honor," he says. "Being able to have input on all aspects of the design makes it even better."
The novel design will appeal to a broad spectrum of players and music styles. In addition to the innovative components, the AESFG boasts a sleek double-cutaway design with a beautifully carved top, Sperzel locking tuners, Seymour Duncan pick-ups and a 12.5-degree angled three-on-a-side headstock. The AESFG is available in a black or white finish.
"The AESFG is loaded with new features and construction methods that together make a very unique guitar that will appeal to all playing styles," states Ken Dapron, USA manager, Yamaha Guitar Development. "The combination of a classic look and high-tech features blend together to make this design stand out from the crowd."
