New Yamaha Compass Series Guitars Point the Way
Yamaha Corporation of America announces two new additions to the highly successful Compass line at Winter NAMM 2001: the CPX8-SY Ocean Series and the 12-string CPX8-12 acoustic/electric guitars. Like other members of the Compass line, the new models offer striking looks, the convenience of a cutaway, vibrant natural acoustic tone, and a superior hybrid electronics system that makes it equally effective on-stage and in the studio. The new instruments deliver professional features at the right price for working musicians.
"We've taken the art of acoustic guitar design to a new level with these Compass Series models," says David Bergstrom, director of marketing, Combo Group, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "Players will love them with their eyes and ears."
The CPX8-SY, the first of the "Ocean Series," complements the Cedar-topped CPX8-M introduced at Summer NAMM 2000 with some eye-catching new finishes, while the CPX8-12 is Yamaha's first 12-string Compass—its compact body provides a strikingly clear and loud acoustic sound that translates to a brilliant, shimmering 12-string tone when amplified. Building on Yamaha's long tradition of fine craftsmanship, the new entries boast the finest materials and finishes available. The Solid Spruce top over Flamed Sycamore back and sides produce rich and vibrant tone, while the Mahogany neck and Rosewood fingerboard provide the razor-sharp playability that guitarists expect from the Compass family.
Spectacular new finishes bring out the CPX8-SY's woods in eye-popping detail, providing a stunning visual statement for the professional. The CPX8-12's natural finish, smaller body-shape, and cutaway offer a look and sound that's unique among 12-strings today. Rosewood bridges, gold hardware, and distinct inlays round out a design that's fresh yet grounded in tradition.
Both models feature a hybrid System 45 pick-up/preamp combo, which offers complete sonic control. The combination of bridge-mounted piezo pick-up and condenser microphone (mounted on a gooseneck near the soundhole), translates into tone with unmatched accuracy, making it a stalwart for both live performance and recording.
"The Compass continues to grow as the professional's choice," notes Gary Cook, Guitar product manager. "It's rare that a guitar is this effective both on stage and in the studio—and in front of the camera."
