On several of these titles, you can choose to either listen to the whole song or hear only the accompaniment, thus enabling you to play the guitar part yourself with the band behind you. The standout feature with this CD-ROM has to be the "animated fretboard," which shows the exact fingering and string to play, displayed in time with the actual song. Even if you are unsure of guitar tablature, you can still learn when you use this feature. It's like having a real guitar teacher showing you exactly what to play, when. Each song is divided into several screens, and you can "loop" each section when practicing. Once you've memorized a song, you can play the whole thing straight through, using the "jukebox" feature. Other musical tools here include a tuner, which plays the taped sounds of the guitar's six strings at pitch, and a handy metronome utility. In all, with Guitar Songs Vol. 1, you'll learn some classic tunes, including both rhythm and solo guitar parts. Suitable for the intermediate guitarist, this collection of songs can be a definite asset for improving your playing and extending the range of your musical styles.
