Easy Guitar Chord Finger Picking: E minor
Guitar chords can be played either strumming all notes or playing each note. Strumming a chord means you hit all guitar notes or strings at once. Either with your guitar pick or hand. Picking each note means you play each note of the chord with a certain rhythm.
In this next guitar exercise we are going to use the picking technique with the E minor chord or Em short.
Take a look at the guitar sheet music and tablature. The sheet music shows how to play this the notes and the rhythm and the tab shows which strings to use on your guitar. First listen to the included guitar music. When you hear this you might think hey this sounds like tje song from Metallica "Nothing Else Matters". It sounds like it because it is the same chord, but it is a different rhythm. What this actually tells us is that you can write great songs using very standard techniques and chords. Great songs are usually about everything being right together instead of what chords you use.
The great thing about the E minor chord and this exercise is that you do not even have to use your left hand. You only have to hit the strings with your right hand and at the right moment. If you want to play this with your guitar pick then do so. If you want to use the finger picking styles then use your thumb for the lower bass notes of the chords, the starting note of each bar in this case. And use your other fingers for the other strings:
1st string: ring finger
2nd string: middle finger
3rd string: index finger
4th string
5th string
6th string: Thumb
Try playing it while looking at the sheet music instead of your hands.
