Mixing Guitar Fundamental Frequencies and Harmonics

Now that we have established some of the basics note ranges and frequencies for different instruments it’s time to look at the complete frequency range of different instruments. To get the most of equalizers it’s essential to know how fundamentals and harmonics work together to create the full range.

When mixing it’s important to look at the frequency range of the fundamental notes of the instrument and the frequencies of the harmonics. In the next chart two frequency ranges are shown the fundamental frequencies of a full guitar chord and the harmonics of that same guitar chord. This shows a few things.

1) The fundamental note frequency range is limited compared to the frequency range of the harmonics.
2) The fundamentals and harmonics have a range where they both interfere with each other.

When you are mixing a guitar the first frequency range will only boost or cut the fundamental notes of the guitar. This is the bottom of the guitar

The middle frequency range will change both the fundamentals and frequencies.

The higher range will only change harmonics. In general this will change the overall sound of an instrument.
