Zoom GFX707 Multi-effect:

I have used this little effects box for about a year. It replaced a rack of pedals[comp, rat,nr,chorus, delay] At first I missed the rat till I found the powerdriver setting in the distortion bank. In there I also found all of the other distortion pedals I have ever had and most can have compression with them. The nr is simple but the EQ is complicated. It has a volume control attached to the bass boost to adjust as bass is added. The presence, mid, and treble are easy. Boosting the mids really brings a solo patch to life. The bank of chorus type effects is extensive. The notable effects are vintage chorus, tremelo, pedal wah, tremelo-chorus, and there are also two delay effects that can be used in conjunction with the reverb bank. The pitch shifter has also some good settings. In the reverb bank there is a choice of pingpong delay, Two reverbs and two delay-reverbs. My choice is hall reverb with the time turned right down and the tone turned right up but they are all usefull. There is also a sampling function. It records six seconds of whatever is played into it. the volume of the record is adjustable via the pedal. As the recording uses all of the memory in the zoom there are no effects available while using the sampling function. However an effect can be added to the signal prior to the zoom input using a separate effects unit and it will record that. The six seconds recording time is limiting however so just using it for what it was designed for is probably the best as it holds about three bars of sample. Among the selections of effects there are combinations, ie chorus-wah , compression-fuzz , delay-reverb. If these are selected the amount of adjustable paramaters are reduced from those available when a single effect is selected. The pedal can be set to control the volume or any of the effects. The best use I have found is controling the distortion bank turning up either the amount of drive or compression. It also controls the pedal wah. The little drum machine is useful for practicing or for using live in a limited way. It has just a straight beat with no fills. Turning it off and on requires pressing one little button with a finger rather than a foot. The beats are found by turning the analogue knobs, one selects the patterns, which are located one after the other. It needs to be running to hear which one to choose. The other knob adjusts the volume of the drumbeat. The patterns themselves are all usefull standard styles with a couple of variations of beats for each style. The first pattern is 16 beat, a straight 4/4 and they dont get much more complicated than that. The amp sim adjusts the tone. As I use a little marshall, it doesnt add to it, so I leave it turned off. I have tried using it, the amp sim, through a bass amp and pa, but this effects box doesnt realy need it as tone control is already there in abundance. The size of this little box hides the amount of access to editing the signal. The quality of the digital effects are perfect, and the longer I have had this little box the more I like it and there is a lot more to it than I have described.
