Music Theory: Scales in Metal Guitar
To many guitar players wanting to play and learn metal guitar it may seem that most metal music does not follow any music theory rules and that most metal guitar players just play fast. But if you look a little beyond the tattoos and long hair you will find that many of these guitar players have actually taken the time to learn to play guitar, develop monster technique and speed and know the music theory “rules”. The way they use them however is typical of metal and metal guitar playing. So let’s look at scales and music theory from that perspective and touch some of the basics of music theory and how it is used in metal.
