Guitar Speed Exercises: Guitar Riff Speed

To keep improving your technique we will now play a basic riff This riff is one of those guitar speed exercises that will show and learn you some essential skills that you need to play fast guitar riffs.

Now take a look at the guitar music below and let's start with some basic Guitar Exercise Notes:

- play with down strokes only at lower speeds.
- use upstrokes only for the faster 16th notes at high tempo settings
- try playing the chord parts with using three techniques:

1) index and middle finger for each chord using slides
2) barre index finger with slides
3) barre index finger for E5, barre middle finger for F5

if you use the slides try making the slides without much noticable sound.

- Be sure to mute the open E string when you play the chords part

1) using your right hand
2) using your left hand

As you can see you have a lot of options when playing such a basic but difficult riff. Try using this guitar speed exercise to use and improve all the mentioned options and techniques. Usually you do not need all of them at once, but practicing your guitar techniques in such a riff is an essential part to becoming a better guitarist.
