How guitar tablature works

Lets take our second basic guitar tablature example. The guitar tablature shows six lines which are your guitar strings.

e-----------0-----------
B---------0---0---------
G-------0-------0-------
D-----2-----------2-----
A---2---------------2---
E-0-------------------0-

The first line is the thinnest string on your guitar. The bottom string is the lowest string on your guitar.

Some guitar players think it is silly to have the guitar tablature upside down like this, but it makes some sense. First of all the guitar tablature shows the highest notes high in the notation, just like sheet music.
And secondly, when you have the guitar on your lap and you look down to the neck of your guitar you will see the thinnest string is also on top.

Learning to read guitar tablature
Lets start reading this guitar tablature example. Like normal reading and sheet music reading start on the left and move right. But don't just read the first line, read all six at once! The first note you will find in the guitar tablature is a 0 (zero) on the bottom line. So you play an open string E string (the thickest string on your guitar)..
So the first thing to remember

0 means open string on your guitar.

Moving to the right you will find a 2 in the guitar tablature on the A string. So you place your middle finger on the second fret of the A string and play it.

Moving to the right in the gutiar tablatrue you will find another 2 on the D string. Now place your middle finger on the second fret of the D string of your guitar and play it.

The next note is an open G string. And now you should be able to read basic guitar tablature! Not so difficult is it?
