Harrison TVD-SL into WHAS TV Channel 11 Louisville Station equipment upgrade
WHAS TV Channel 11 in Louisville, Kentucky has purchased a Harrison TVD-SL digital Broadcast console. This audio console purchase is part of a complete control room upgrade to replace obsolete electronics and equip the broadcasting facilities with the most up to date console technology available.
The station is a news heavy operation, producing over 30 hours per week. Additionally, the station produces a weekly news commentary program. For the last 48 years, WHAS has been producing what has become the largest single station telethon in the country to benefit local childrenıs causes.
Director of Engineering, Neal Metersky, was instrumental in the decision to purchase the TVD-SL.
"Many factors influenced our decision - the versatility of the console, the price, the features, the architecture the console was strong all across the board. I liked the programmability of the board as well as the analog to digital conversion package included in the console. The routing switcher expands the capability and flexibility of the TVD-SL far beyond that of traditional audio consoles. And I like that Harrison is working closely with me. I have complete confidence in Harrisonıs customer service."
While visiting the factory for a pre-shipment orientation, WHASı Senior Audio Producer, Mike Harpring was introduced to the power of TVD-SL and commented with obvious enthusiasm about a few of the solutions that the Harrison TVD-SL will offer him.
One such feature, a Harrison exclusive, is the Producerıs Bus. The Producerıs Bus allows the mixer to hear the talent - even when not on the air on the PFL bus. That bus is then routed to the station intercom system allowing remote sources to talk directly to the producer with a single line, through the console, even while the console is on-air and doing other things. In the past, the producer could talk on the IFB but the remote couldnıt talk back.
"Vital information is often coming in from the field but if nobody knows that then it doesnıt do any good. Sometimes the producer doesnıt even know that the remote is talking to him. With this Producerıs Bus feature, I can send the necessary information to the producer before they even know their talentıs trying to talk to them. The producer can hear the remote even when weıre on line with other sources. Thatıs important."
"I like the fact that the TVD-SL is digital and it's so flexible. It comes with eight separate mix minus buses. Weıre often up and down with remote trucks doing four remotes in a row sometimes. The lack of mix minus buses has been our biggest problem all these years. Weıve needed more mix minuses for a long time."
"I love the ability to manipulate the console by the touchscreen, especially the dynamics section and the routing capabilities. Everyone at the station will love the snapshot capabilities. The TVD-SL's desktop layout makes it very easy to see the status of every channel. It's really very easy to operate the TVD-SL. And the more I want to learn about it, the more I'll be able to do."
A feature, unique to TVD-SL, offers the option of built-in TFT video displays. Up to 21 high resolution 6.4 inch LCD monitors can be mounted in the meterbridge to display a station's video sources and eliminate the need for a costly "video wall" for the audio operator.
Harpring commented gleefully. "I love em. I love em! They are ideal. This board has all of its monitors built right in there. That is the ideal place to be looking. I put my camera monitors on the left above all the talent mics. I put the receiver, frame sync monitors on the right so itıs right above all those sources and I just have to look left or right in front of me and I can see them. I love that!"
WHAS produces seven hours of programming a day; their morning news block is the highest rated among the ABC affiliated newscasts. With the addition of WHAS to the list, five Belo stations now have Harrison consoles in their control rooms.
TVD-SL is Harrisonıs latest contribution to digital broadcast console technology. The groundbreaking console was introduced to an enthusiastic audience at NAB 2002. Already very popular in the United States, the TVD-SL will make its European debut at IBC 2002.
