Center Stage at Skywalker Sound
Located 40 minutes north of San Francisco, Skywalker Sound, a division of Lucas Digital Ltd. LLC, is one of the world's leading recording and postproduction studios. You would expect such a famous facility to be outfitted solely with the finest state-of-the-art equipment, and that is indeed the case. In fact, you can find one or more TC System 6000s in use almost everywhere at Skywalker, including in six mixing rooms, commercial mix and sound design rooms and in the scoring stage, which can accommodate 125 musicians.
Chief engineer Paul Pavelka explains the reasons why: "The bottom line is its versatility. The 6000 will do so many things. The user interface is so well thought-out, plus it sounds good! So it's a great combination. In addition, now that we're all digital on the film side of the facility, its AES/EBU interface fit right into our system."
"Our System 6000s are mostly used for room sounds; they simulate spaces really well. We also use its compressor/limiter functions frequently; these days I'm experimenting more and more with its 5.1 multi-band compression algorithms. Another thing that our mixers have really locked onto is the fact that the 6000 chases timecode; they've fallen in love with that. They always have the units chasing timecode so they can change presets on the fly. We've also appreciated the fact that it's networkable - we've been using that in various ways, depending on the rooms they are installed in."
Recent feature films that have been mixed at Skywalker using the System 6000 include Final Fantasy, Atlantis, Jurassic Park III, A.I. and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In addition, the 6000 is playing a large role in mixes currently being completed for the upcoming holiday films.
Even in big-budget film mixing projects, time is money. Pavelka is quick to point out that, "one big advantage to the System 6000 is that it allows you to get to settings very quickly, and that's very important to the mixers. It's a big reason for the unit's popularity here."
"Between the film mix rooms, scoring stage and commercials, we probably use every feature the 6000 has to offer, and certainly all of its power," Pavelka concludes.
