SPL Surround Monitoring Controller (SMC) 5.1 audio in DAWAfter announcing the new Grapevine Series units HeadAmp 4 and KeyMix 6 as well as the Router concurrent to this year's Winter NAMM, SPL is heading for the 2003 Frankfurt show with several additional new products in their baggage.The desktop-format Surround Monitoring Controller (SMC) is destined to become a favorite tool among the rapidly growing number of people working with 5.1 audio in DAW's or similar desktop production systems. It manages two surround and two stereo sources and speaker sets each, including source and speaker switching as well as Dim, Mute, Mono L/R and Mono LS/RS functions. The SMC offers one set of balanced surround and stereo inputs each via a Sub-D 25 connector; the other set of inputs are unbalanced on RCA connectors. A six-layer potentiometer provides accurate volume control without signal-degenerating DAC's, VCA's or the like, while a Slave output allows the stereo or surround input signal to be routed directly to a recording device. With its new GainStation series, SPL once again demonstrates its expertise in microphone preamplifier design. Available as a compact, free-standing single channel unit or a 19"/2 unit 8-channel device, the GainStations employ two separately controllable preamp stages; a transistor stage offering up to 56 dB and a tube preamp stage providing 26 dB of gain. The German manufacturer sees two major advantages to this design: first of all, optimal gain points can easily be determined for each stage and combined at will, providing perfect level settings with minimal noise and easy sound tailoring. Secondly, flexible tube sound variations are readily available during recording. SPL targets the GainStations for the high-end recording sector, and the specs follow suit: 60-Volt operating voltage, fully discrete Class A circuitry throughout and +28 dB output level. The impressive feature set includes peak and FET limiters, separate instrument inputs, switchable input impedance for optimal mic performance and an output control. In the past twelve months, SPL has launched impressive examples of its revolutionary "High Gain" technology, featuring 120-Volt operating voltage—an absolute first in analog signal processing (i.e. MMC1, PQ). In Frankfurt this year, SPL will introduce a recording version of its PQ Mastering Equalizer, adapted to recording applications via higher amplitude ranges and the removal of some expensive features like digital control/storability and motorized potentiometers. Last but not least, SPL will show a new 24-bit/96 kHz stereo A/D converter module as an optional digital I/O for the company's new GainStation preamps as well as the TrackOne and ChannelOne channel strips and the Kultube tube compressor. The build-in module provides an S/P-DIF auto-sync input, two outputs (S/P-DIF and optical) and supports 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz sample rates. SPL will be showing these new products along with its full product range at booth E 57, hall 9.1.
