What is Jazz Music?Giving a definition of any music style is really impossible. It's like saying the style of the Beatles is pop music. Although the music of the Beatles is considered one of the roots of pop music it certainly is not the only music style any more that is considered pop music, especially if you listen to todays pop music.With jazz music it is no different. Just buy or download songs from the jazz category from anywhere between 1950 and 1970, or even between 1920 and today, and you will find that jazz is a changing music style. Or just compare different styles of jazz and you will find that every song is different and different artists try to experiment to create new and original music. In jazz there are however a few aspects that make the music style different compared to other music styles. The swing rhythm and improvisation are 2 very important elements in playing jazz. Some consider these critical and will not even consider it jazz if there is no improvisation or their idea of swing. But for musicians there are also other aspects that make jazz Jazz. The sound is certainly one a jazz guitar sound is very different than a metal guitar sound. A jazz bass sound is very different than a punk bass guitar sound. Chords in jazz music are usually used and played differently than in other music styles. The scales used are different compared to other music styles. And I could go on and on, chord progressions, song structure, drum sound, drum styles, playing style, emotion, etc.. When you start exploring and learning jazz you will see that jazz is very different than other music styles, no matter how you will look at it.
