DJ Producer Paul van Dyk debuts Allen & Heath Xone VF-1 Filter
Allen & Heath delivered a Xone VF-1 universal analogue stereo filter to leading San Francisco dance music venue 1015 Folsom in time for a major DJ event on Friday 29th October. The show, featuring world-leading German DJ/producer Paul van Dyk on his fund-raising Rock the Vote Tour 2004, marked the public debut in the United States of the VF-1.
Paul van Dyk's opening DJ, San Francisco-based Jerry Bonham, actually got the honour of being the first DJ in the USA to get his hands on the VF-1 - and loved it. The VF-1 had already received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from DJs, producers and nightclub owners alike when it was introduced at the PLASA show in September.
Scot Peterson, 1015's sound designer and engineer, was hugely impressed with the VF-1's debut performance, and commented, "There were two features I really appreciate about this unit. First, the valve added a level of warmth and richness to our PA system that was astounding. Secondly, the balanced inputs and outputs and the lack of gain controls really make this unit somewhat foolproof. Virtually every other DJ effects unit on the market is a disaster in the hands of all but the most responsible and educated DJs. This unit isn't! The VF-1 is one effects unit which both DJs and sound engineers should love."
One unique feature of the VF-1 module is the inclusion of valve overdrive circuitry, whereby a single control enables the user to dial-in an amount of valve "warmth" while maintaining a constant output level. A resonance control with automatic limiter circuits enable high levels of resonance to be used without causing the system to overload.
According to 1015's owner, Ira Sandler, "I've always strived to keep 1015 at the forefront of sound and lighting technology. Just about every leading DJ in the world has appeared at my club over the years, which is something I'm very proud of. Today's DJs are always looking for ways to enhance their performances. The new VF-1 filter looks very exciting."
1015's Director of Music, Cece Blake, added, "We have a duty to provide the best and most up-to-date DJ equipment for our guests. I'm really pleased that our club was the first in the country to unveil the VF-1, and to be able to do this on such a special occasion with Paul van Dyk was very special. Another 'first' for 1015!"
The VF-1's circuitry is an enhanced version of the filters built into Allen & Heath's Xone mixers, and offers three basic 24dB/octave valve filter types: high-pass, band-pass and low-pass. The basic filter types can be combined to create further filter types such as 'notch.' The VF-1 additionally offers MIDI capability and also incorporates an envelope follower and an LFO with both triangle and square wave outputs.
