Greg Ladanyi Brings New Life To A Classic Album Jackson Browne's Running On Empty refuels with the System 6000
If you were around in the seventies, you remember Running On Empty -- Jackson Browne's groundbreaking concept album that celebrated both the joys and hassles of being a touring musician. Recorded in various acoustic environments onstage, in hotel rooms, even in the tour bus this is one classic that's a natural for a surround remix. And there's no one better qualified to handle those chores than famed producer Greg Ladanyi, who served as the album's original engineer.
One thing that Ladanyi has learned through the years is to choose the right piece of equipment for the job, and his T.C.System 6000 has become an indispensable tool for this project. Why? His answer is simple: "It's one of the most incredible-sounding boxes I've ever found for creating space, ambience and dimension.
"For this album, I have the System 6000 set up in 5.1 room simulation, which varies from large arenas to small rooms and even bus environments," he explains. "I've transferred the original tracks to [Steinberg] Nuendo and am using its eight-channel panner as a send to route placement into the virtual 5.1 room. That allows each instrument to enter the 'room' from either the rear, the side, the front or the center. The 6000 automatically generates the early reflections at the chosen entrance and then disperses them into the soundfield, just as would happen if there were a real speaking voice or guitar playing in a real room. This has been a great tool to enhance the size of the 5.1 in the record.
"For example," he continues, "In the songs that were recorded live, we make it sound as if you were present at the concert with the band onstage in front of you, complete with centered vocals and backwall reflections. But the System 6000 goes a whole lot further than that. It allows me to move specific sounds around during the performance, like moving the guitar from stage left to stage right -- even behind you -- as if the player were walking around. That's a lot different from using stereo reverbs, where you have to enter the 5.1 soundfield from either the front or the rear. The 6000 allows you to position your source signal anywhere in the room. And I'm loving that!"
According to Ladanyi, Browne himself has been involved in the remixes, and is very pleased with the results. "In fact," comments Ladanyi, "Jackson now has a System 6000 in his own studio, Groovemasters. He loved it so much that he had to have one as well!"
The bottom line for Ladanyi? "The System 6000 is just a great-sounding box. It really gives the true illusion of being in any kind of room you might want to be in. That's what made it absolutely perfect for this project."
