Otis Taylor wins Best new Artist at 23rd Annual W.C. Handy AwardsNorthernBlues Music Recording artist, Otis Taylor, won as "Best New Artist" last night at the 23rd Annual W.C. Handy Awards which took place at Memphis' Orpheum Theatre. The Handy is akin to the Grammy of the blues and is the most prestigious award a blues artist can receive. Taylor earned the honors competing against label-mate Paul Reddick + The Sidemen plus The Crudup Brothers, Harry "Big Daddy" Hypolite and Rico McFarland. O Brother Where Art Thou star Chris Thomas King along with Sean Costello presented the award to Taylor."I didn't think I'd actually win anything," remarked Taylor during his acceptance. "I thought I'd already won with four nominations. I hope to be back." With the release of Taylor's national debut White African, released in 2001 by the new label with the Midas touch, he immediately earned rave reviews from critics and fans alike, thus making Taylor somewhat of a darling in the press. White African topped numerous "Best of" lists at the close of last year and was called "the most on target blues album heard in years" by NPR's "Fresh Air." Considered by most to have inherited the torch from the late John Lee Hooker, Taylor's sparse instrumentation, brazen lyrics and captivating style of storytelling punctuate his largely biographical tales. At the ceremony, Taylor was accompanied by his wife and 14-year-old daughter Cassie Taylor who provides the chilling backing vocals on White African as well his this year's follow-up, Respect The Dead. Billboard asserted, "Taylor follows the release of his superb, Handy Award-nominated album White African with an equally compelling record that is, unfailingly, a galvanizing listening experience." Proving his consistency on Respect the Dead, Taylor, as stated in Blues Revue, is "one of the most original voices in contemporary blues, and one of the most fully developed artists in the entire genre." Never content to rest on his laurels, Taylor released Respect before the ink or praise for White African had time to dry, and will repeat the process again as he and NorthernBlues are already preparing the next album due later this year. + Post comment/question/reply
