On this solo CD, guitarist Marc Ribot takes a break from his Afro-Latin dance group, Los Cubanos Postizos. With his biting and twangy electric and acoustic plectral tones, Ribot turns well-known tunes such as the Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim show tune "Somewhere" and the Beatles' "Happiness Is a Warm Gun," into spacey, left-of-center sound collages full of bite and humor. John Zorn's "Book of Heads" rings with a Middle-Eastern tone and Ribot's takes on the spiritual "Go Down Moses" and the classic "St. James Infirmary" highlight his debt to gospel and the blues. The title track and "Witches and Devils," both penned by saxophonist Albert Ayler, provide the best showcases for Marc Ribot's bold, six-stringed excursions into uncharted sonic territory.
