R.E.M. Reveal
R.E.M. Reveal release date May 2001

R.E.M. have no right at this advanced stage in their career to be making such a spirited and beautiful album as Reveal. Twenty years after "Radio Free Europe," they're still jiggy as year-old pups. Reveal is the sound of a band that's beyond feeling the need to change or to prove themselves to each new generation, but retains its passion. Michael Stipe's voice is at its most evocatively beautiful on "I've Been High," and Peter Buck's eclectic tunes continue along the highly accessible vein mined on 1998's Up. Stipe continues his emergence as an up-front vocalist whose lyrics, if never entirely self-explanatory, now make ingenious use of more readily identifiable phrases, images, and vignettes. Hovering over much of the album is the spirit of Brian Wilson, whose genius is echoed in "Beachball" and almost transcended in the astonishingly plangent "Summer Turns to High." With so much to live up to, it's not far short of astonishing that R.E.M. can still come up with a song such as the gorgeously chiming and shimmering "Imitation of Life," which, on its own, is worth the price of admission. But, from the first synthesizer swirls of the opener "The Lifting" onward, there's nary a dud to be heard on Reveal.

Lush, intricate, moody and beautiful. i got hooked after the second listening. Easily in their top 5 CD's of all time. Enjoy.

r.e.m. is a very difficult band to critique. No band in the last 30 years has put out as many amazing records, and those who have lasted as long as rem have either lost their passion or run out of new ideas/directions. r.e.m. has released at least 4 masterpeices and with the bar so high, the expectations are always unrealistically high. Reveal is not better than Murmur or Life's Rich Pageant or Automatic for the People, but it is definitely in the same league. This is a beautiful record, and is way more consistant than the the last 3. i can't think of any band short of the Beatles who have put out the volume of great songs that r.e.m. has. Thank god (of your choice) they had the courage and good sence to keep doing what they do best.

Entire record flows from start to finish nicely. No fast forwarding required :)

Good album nearly as good as "Automatic". many ballads and Stipe's voice is at his best.
   - Andrea, Rated: 8

This is a very charming album. i love r.e.m. anyway, my faves are Automatic & New Adventures. Reveal is evocative of summers past, and of dreams for summer just beginning.
   - Celine, Rated: 9

Stipe's voice plays against the lush atmospheres of most of the music. The quality of the tunes makes his voice stand out in grating and irritating manner. The new direction of the band is horrible... they need to take a lesson from u2 and get back to basics, but maybe it's too late. With this cd and up, one can only assume that Bill Berry played a much larger role in the band than we were ever led to assume. i can't imagine why Warner's would want to hang on to them. Disappointing stuff!
   - GM, Rated: 4

rem, as their name suggests, have always managed to take me on a mysterious flight into both my thoughts and feelings simultaneously, something few bands can do. Most bands are like the waking hours, bright and obvious, or like the deep sleep, dark and impenetratable. Reveal is for me, their most accomplished album, wedding the vividness and profound beauty of those dreams which give meaning to our waking lives. In terms of memories and impact, Automatic for the People and Document are still my favourites and the exploration of Up is still up there, but in terms of everything coming together, this latest album is their most perfectly realised effort yet. Love that 'all the way to Reno' song, mixes the best of New Adventures road trip themes with the beauty of Up.
   - Julian Eriksson, Rated: 9

Experimental and cerebral, but not to the extent of their last album, Up. The first single, Imitation of Life, employs a subdued and understated orchestral lead and is somewhat reminscent of Out of Time with a little Automatic for the People thrown in. Should be a solid, well received single as it is radio friendly, but totally rem. I'll take the Rain is another winner, more epic and intent with Michael at his best vocal ability. All i want is very solid. Reno is another instantly likable song. Not a true gimme in the bunch. Lush, yet melodic, the album is a continuation of the maturity and theme that band has migrated toward with Up. i liked Up, i thought it was a vastly understated album, as was New Adventures in Hi Fi. But unlike Up, Reveal is more easily likable on first or second listen and less of a grower. If you have the expectation of a full out pop album, ala Out of Time, you might be let down. But if you like the direction the band has taken beginning with Hi Fi, then you should be totally pleased with this album. i celebrate the entire collection of the band and appreciate each album and each era for its own eclectic style. i appreciate and enjoy this album very much and have anticipated its arrival. i am not let down. i don't think many true rem fans will be let down either. If you are looking for another InSync, forget it. But if you enjoy the beauty of music, something a little provocative and yet atmospheric, and the wonderful vocals of Michael Stipe, then by all means pick up this album.
