Roland JP8000 Synthesizer

We couldn’t agree more. Since it came out in 1997, the Roland JP8000 has been satisfying artists with its combination of great analog sounds and digital advantages. The programming is easy, the MIDI implementation is excellent, the real-time controllers are sweet as anything, and those sounds... Phat, phat, phat. The JP8000 is capable of producing the vintage analog synth sounds you love, as well as timbres you’ve never heard before. If you already have a MIDI keyboard to use as a controller, we suggest you go with the new rack/tabletop version, the JP8080. The JP8080 offers some new features like a cool Vocoder, and since it lacks a keyboard, it costs about the same. But if you want the same basic set of incredible sounds in a keyboard version, the JP8000 is still the way to go.

If you have any doubt that this a supremely popular synth, check out the user reviews at Harmony Central. It's rare to find a product receiving this kind of unanimous praise. Part of the appeal is that despite the JP8000’s popularity, you can still create your own personal sounds on it. Lets put it in the words of one user who thought a '10' didn’t go quite far enough in the Expressiveness/Sounds category: "This is where I give a 50. This is not a keyboard for bread and butter sounds, but for creating your own personality."

Whether you’re a remixer, DJ, composer or live musician, we think you’ll like what you hear. So beam into the analog universe of the JP8000 and see how its features will help you create a new world of sound:

The JP8000 produces its unique synth sound through Roland's new Analog Modeling technology. A dedicated DSP Oscillator generates 7 totally independent waveform algorithms, producing new sounds you never thought possible. In addition to modeling vintage analog synth Saw Tooth, Triangle and Square waves, the JP8000 also generates completely new waveforms like Super Saw, Triangle Mod and Feedback OSC. Using these waveforms the JP-8000 delivers an incredible array of sounds ranging from vintage, analog synth-type sounds for '60s and '70s music, to new, cutting-edge sounds for modern techno and dance-related music. Moreover, Analog Modeling enables drastic tonal changes in realtime with control over synth parameters such as cutoff and resonance.

Realtime control is the expressive "heart" of the JP8000. Parameters are accessed directly via intuitively positioned knobs, sliders, buttons, pitch bender/modulation lever and ribbon controller - all located on the front panel for easy sound creation and editing. The ribbon controller, for example, is very easy to assign, allowing you to layer several parameters and control them simultaneously.

In addition to the choices of Basic, Advanced, Original and Variations, each selectable via a dedicated button. Right in mid-performance, a you can add colorful realtime variations to the backing arrangement. The Dynamic Arranger allows the volume of each part to be set individually, according to the key touch of the arranger section. You can choose fill-ins and breaks in a song or add pitch bends and modulate the melody for the kind of expressive performance a real band would deliver. A large graphic LCD provides at-a-glance status of each part's sound and level. Since the front panel is newly configured into blocks defined by operation, control is more intuitive. Arranger control buttons are in a single line and provide a lot of space for comfortable operation.

Various types of preset arpeggio patterns and a powerful RPS function make the JP-8000 perfect for DJ-style "remix" performances. Both the Arpeggiator and RPS function can be easily sync'd with an external MIDI clock for advanced performance and MIDI applications.

It's simple! With "Motion Control," a built-in sequencer records and continuously overdubs the sequential realtime movement of control faders and knobs, of up to 8- measure loops. When you play back a Motion Control loop, your hands are free toplay the keyboard while the JP-8000 plays back your control changes perfectly.

The JP8000 is fully MIDI-compatible. All slider, knob and ribbon controller movements are automatically sent to any external MIDI device in realtime. With dedicated knobs on the front panel for digital delay and chorus effects and treble/bass tone control, you can enhance your sound even further in realtime. And the JP8000's 8-voice polyphony is perfect for synth bass, brass, pads, ambient and any other chord-voiced sounds.
