Yamaha PSR170 Defines "More for Less"
Leading consumer and trade publications have long recognized Yamaha Portable Keyboards as superior musical instruments and the portable keyboard brand to buy. That traditional edge becomes even more apparent with the introduction of the 61-key Yamaha PSR170 portable keyboard at Winter NAMM 2001. Packed with cutting-edge features, the unit is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2001. The performance and value available in this most affordable Yamaha Portable Keyboard confirms the fact that quality instruments for students and enthusiasts have become within reach.
"Previously, a 61-key portable keyboard could not meet this price position without sacrificing significant quality or useful innovations," states Jim Presley, marketing manager, Portable Keyboards. "The PSR170 changes all that."
A realistic piano sound is recognized as one of the most important requirements customers look for in a portable keyboard. When the user pushes the large, piano-shaped button on the front panel, the best piano is automatically chosen, the auto-accompaniment is turned off and the PSR170 is placed in "full keyboard mode"—just like a piano. Next to the Portable Grand button is a metronome-shaped button giving the user an on-board metronome for practice. The PSR170 is both stereo and MIDI capable. A back-lit LCD display, bass ports for improved sound quality, and the new Yamaha Education Suite II complete the package.
"The PSR line represents the only portable keyboards in this price range that have a stereo-sampled piano sound," Presley adds. "That technology is usually reserved for more expensive, professional-level products."
When users say their Yamaha keyboards speak to them, they mean it. Many of the functions of the PSR170 have vocal cues that announce the function in English. The built-in Yamaha Education Suite (YES) II will actually count down the beat, just as a teacher would. The YES II function provides both right- and left-hand exercises, a built-in chord dictionary, and interactive functions that will actually grade your playing of internal exercises. It's the closest thing to having a real teacher. Just to make the learning experience a little fun, there are built-in musical games. And just in case younger customers don't think an educational keyboard can be cool, the PSR170 has a complete assortment of DJ sounds and rockin' styles.
