Logic Control is the expandable hardware remote control system for Logic Audio 5, jointly developed by Emagic and Mackie Designs.

Multi Channel View / Channel Strip View
Logic Control knows two different modes of operation: Multi Channel View/Channel Strip View:
Multi Channel View ÷ you see one parameter for all tracks.
Channel Strip View ÷ you see several parameters of a function "block" ÷ EQ's, as an example ÷ for the selected track.
Switching between these modes is achieved via a simple key press.
LC Display
The LCD (dependent on the current mode) displays a range of different information.
Parameter names and values usually refer to the V-Pot directly below the entry in the LCD.
The information shown in the LCD can be switched between parameter names and values.
When in Multi Channel View, the upper row of the LCD always displays the track name. The lower LCD row displays the parameter name or the parameter value of the parameter currently controlled by the V-Pots.
In Channel Strip View, the upper row of the LCD displays the parameter name and the lower LCD row indicates the parameter value.
Alternately, the upper row of the LCD will show the name of the selected track, the selected function area and the current page inside the selected function area (if there are several pages). In this mode, the parameter names appear in the lower row of the LCD.
Switching between these modes is via a simple key stroke.
As an example: If you use an Audio Instrument like the ES1, there are 33 parameters. Now, imagine a configuration of one Logic Control and an additional XT unit. In channel strip mode you can edit a maximum of 16 parameters, in parallel, with the V-Pots. To edit the next 16 parameters, you need to switch to the next "bank" of 16 parameters/V-Pots a.s.o. With a more complex Audio Instrument, the number of "banks" increases. If you only have a Logic Control without an XT unit, there would be 5 "banks" for the ES1. (4 x banks, each containing 8 V-Pots for the first 32 parameters, and another bank for the 33rd parameter.
Level Metering
Signal LED: indicates signal presence for a track (audio and MIDI).
Optional level meter: If the signal LED's are insufficient for your needs, a horizontal level meter can be displayed on the lower row of the LCD display.
Display of Peak Hold (as known from the audio objects)
Permanent display of overloads (can be reset)
The display of level meters does not require any additional MIDI bandwidth.
Turn on/off via a single key stroke.
V-Pots/V-Selects
Fast response to the rotation of V-Pots results in smooth and precise value changes.
The circular LED segments surrounding each V-Pot display the current parameter value. This will vary as follows, dependent on the selected parameter:
Single segment (e.g. panorama, frequency)

Connected series of LED segments from left to right (e.g. send level)

Connected series of LED segments, starting in the center position and fanning to the left OR right (e.g. EQ gain)

Series of connected LED segments, starting in the center position and fanning to the left AND right (e.g. Q-Factor)

An LED indicates when the parameter value is in the centered/default position

Use of the V-Select button generally resets the currently selected parameter to it's default value. If a parameter has only 2 values, V-Select toggles between these 2 values. V-Selects can also used for (de)activating certain modes, for which no hardware buttons exists. The names of these modes are displayed in the LCD.
Surround-Angle is not limited to values between 0 and 359 degrees ÷ it can be freely rotated.
Switches
The REC/RDY, SOLO, MUTE and SELECT buttons, plus their respective LED's work as simply as in Logic.
REC/RDY LED's blink when a track is armed for recording
LED's flash continuously during audio recording
The Mute buttons blink when one, or several, tracks are soloed (Bild Solo- und Mute-Tasten)
Simple reset of Record Ready, Solo and Mute status for all tracks simultaneously.
Fader
Faders work at 10 Bit resolution (1024 steps, which results in a resolution smaller than 0.1 mm). Logic internally handles these fader values (dependent on the parameter) at precise, 32 Bit resolution.
Faders per default control track volume.
Flip-Mode 1 (Duplicate): Fader positions update to reflect V-Pot parameter positions. This elegant solution allows any parameter to be controlled and automated with an absolute fader move, while the V-Pots can be used for stepped relative value changes.
Flip-Mode 2: The assignments of the faders are "flipped" (reversed) with the V-Pots. This allows for functionality such as control over volume with the V-Pots and EQ Gain control with the faders.
Assignment Modes in the Track Area
The different Assignment Modes determine the parameter to be edited or automated with the V-Pots. The LCD automatically updates to reflect the selected parameter name and value.
The 2-digit LED informs you, which Assignment Mode is selected and if Channel Strip or Multi Channel View is active.
There are 6 default Assignment Modes to choose from with dedicated buttons: Track Parameters, Pan/Surround, EQ, Send, Plug-Ins and Audio Instrument.
Track Parameter
Track parameters (Multi Channel View): a specified track parameter is shown for each track.
Track parameters (Channel Strip View): all track parameters (volume, pan, level, channel mode, input, output, automation) are shown for the selected track.
Automation modes can be selected via separate buttons without having to call up the Track Parameter Assignment Mode.
Pan/Surround
Pan/Surround parameter (Multi Channel View): A selected Pan/Surround-Parameter is shown for each of the tracks. On non-Surround tracks, the Pan parameter will be displayed.
Pan/Surround parameter (Channel Strip View): all Pan/Surround parameters (Angle, Diversity, LFE, Surround Mode) are shown for the selected track. For non-Surround tracks, the Pan parameter will be displayed.
Special modes Angle/Diversity: V-Pots controls the Surround Angle and the faders control the Surround Diversity for all Surround tracks.
EQ
EQ parameter (Multi Channel View): The selected parameter of the selected EQ is shown for each track.
EQ parameter (Channel Strip View): all four EQ parameters (EQ Type, Frequency, Gain, Q-Factor) are shown for the selected track. This equates to control over 2 EQ's per Logic Control unit, with 4 parameters from each EQ being assigned to V-Pots 1 to 4, and the second EQ to V-Pots 5 to 8. This means that all EQ parameters for all four EQ bands are distributed over two pages if one Logic Control is used. When coupled with a Logic Control XT, all 4 EQ's per track are displayed (and are controllable) simultaneously.
Special Frequency/Gain mode: V-Pots control the frequency and the faders control the gain of a freely selectable EQ for each track.
Send
Send parameter (Multi Channel View): The selected parameter of the selected send is shown for each track.
Send-Parameter (Channel Strip View): All send parameters (Destination, Level, Pre/Post, Mute) are shown for the selected track, with control over 2 sends per Logic Control unit. This means that all Send parameters for all 8 Sends are distributed over 4 pages. With 3 Logic Control XT units, the parameters for 4 sends are shown at the same time.
Special Destination/Level mode: V-Pots control the destination and the faders control the send level of a selectable send for each track.
Plug-Ins
Plug-in selection (Multi Channel View): the selected Plug-in used on the selected insert slot is shown for each track.
Plug-ins can be bypassed from Logic Control. Bypassed plug-ins are indicated with an asterisk before their name.
Plug-ins can be selected by rotating the V-Pot encoders. The built-in push (V-Select) switch of the V-Pots activates the selected plug-in ÷ even during playback.
When the V-Pot push switch is used, the plug-in window is automatically launched onscreen and Logic Control instantly switches to the plug-in editor, allowing the editing of the plug-in.
Plug-in selection (Channel Strip View): the Plug-ins selected on ALL insert slots are shown for the selected track. The activation of a plug-in is as per the procedure outlined above.
Plug-in editor: all Plug-in parameters of the active Insert on the selected track are shown. You can freely switch between Inserts, and therefore plug-ins, with a single key stroke.
If there are more parameters for a plug-in (or channels) than V-Pots, you can "step" up or down by a "bank" or by a single parameter. To explain, if a plug-in contains say 17 parameters, you could affect parameters 1 to 8 using the V-Pots. You could then switch by bank to parameters 9 to 16, and by a single step to deal with parameter 17. When using a single step, the parameter assigned to parameter 16 will step "down" and the V-Pot will be assigned to parameter 17, making the span run from parameter 10 to 17.
Audio Instrument
Audio Instrument selection (Multi Channel View): The selected Audio Instrument plug-in will be shown for each Audio Instrument track. Audio Instruments are activated and launched in the same manner as plug-ins. The procedure is outlined in the plug-in section of this function overview.
Audio Instrument Plug-in Editor: All parameters of an Instrument assigned to the selected track are displayed. Parameter selection for instruments is as per that of plug-ins.
You can toggle between Audio Instrument and plug-in editor of a track with a single button press.
The chosen parameter pages are remembered for Audio Instrument and plug-in editor separately. So you can toggle with a single button press between e.g. page 3 of an ES1 and page 2 of the Tape Delay.
Track Display Selection
There are 2 Modes: Track View and Global View.
In the Track View all tracks as you see them in the Arrange are displayed. Tracks that have the same track objects are combined.
In the Global View, all of one or several classes of audio or MIDI tracks (MIDI, inputs, audio, Instruments, Aux, busses, outputs, Master) are displayed. The selection of a desired class is achieved through pushing one, or multiple, "class" buttons simultaneously on the Logic Control.
Switching between the Global and Folder Views is via a simple key stroke. The track class selection in the Global View is preserved when switching between View modes.
Usually the first 8 (or 16, 24, 32 etc., dependent on the number of Logic Control XT units used) tracks are displayed. The display can be moved by an equal number (8, 16, 24 etc.) of tracks (Fader Banks) to the left or right.
Similarly, the movement of the display by a single track (channel) is also possible. This is useful for the selection of 2 tracks which are part of two neighboring Fader Banks.
The current Fader Bank is discretely saved for both the Folder and Global views, ensuring that the desired tracks or channels appear when switching between view modes.
Clock/Timecode Display
Always shows the current song position. Switchable between beats (bar/beat/format/ticks) and SMPTE time code position.
The display format of beats/SMPTE position reflects the representation shown in Logic (e.g. time code with Quarter Frames or display of bars with/without dots or without format).
Function Keys
These 8 freely assignable buttons are designed for control over any desired function(s).
By default, these buttons are assigned to the activation of screensets 1 to 7. The F8 key closes the topmost floating window. When coupled with the Shift button, the function keys open or close windows of different classes.
Changing the Automation Mode
The automation mode of the selected track can be directly activated/switched via 4 buttons.
LED's indicate the current mode.
The automation mode of all tracks can be switched simultaneously.
Transport Functions
Stop, Rewind, Fast Forward, Start and Record are controlled via the large transport buttons
Shuttle mode: several different speeds of forward and backward shuttling are available with the REWIND and F.FWD buttons.
The Jog Wheel is used to scroll the current song position.
Use the SCRUB button to activate Audio Scrubbing. i.e. to run Audio when scrolling with the Jog Wheel.
Switchable Modes
Dedicated Buttons with Status LED to Switch:
Cycle mode
Drop mode
Replace mode
MIDI/loudspeaker-click and
Solo of selected track.
Marker
In Marker mode, the REWIND and F.FWD buttons step to the previous/next marker.
V-selects allow you to create a new marker (with and without rounding) and to cancel existing ones.
With the Marker button held, quick jump to markers via V-Selects/REWIND/F.FWD is possible-without the need to activate marker mode.
Nudge
In Nudge mode, the REWIND and F.FWD buttons move the selected sequences/audio regions left/right by an adjustable value (tick, format, denominator, bar, frame, 1/2 frame).
V-Selects allow the movement of a sequence/audio region right/left by bar, denominator or format.
Another V-Select allows for Pickup Clock: This moves the selected sequences/audio regions to the current song position.
With the Nudge button held, quick fast movement via the V-Selects/REWIND/F.FWD is possible-without the need to activate nudge mode.
Cursor Keys
The cursor keys are multi-purpose. They can be used for:
Selecting the parameter "bank" (left/right) or an EQ, send or insert-slot (up/down).
When Zoom mode is activated, the active (topped) window can be horizontally or vertically zoomed.
The following functions can also be controlled with the cursor keys:
Increase/decrease the zoom level of the selected track,
Reset the zoom level of the selected track and
Reset the zoom level of all selected tracks of the same class.
Further Functions
Dedicated SAVE button for convenient saving of the song. A status LED indicates if the song has been changed since the last save.
UNDO button for reversing the last data-changing function. A status LED indicates whether or not UNDO is available.
The default dialog box button and the abort option can be selected with the CANCEL and ENTER buttons.
Rude Solo Light: LED flashes when an audio track is soloed or track solo is turned on.
Master fader: controls the overall (master) volume
Input for foot switch 1: start or stop
Input for foot switch 2: punch in/out
External Control: a volume pedal allows external control over the overall volume. Useful for 2-handed playing, guitarists etc.
When a dialog box appears on the computer monitor, the text will also be displayed shown on the Logic Control LCD.
The V-Select switch can be used for confirmation (button presses) when in a dialog box. When the text of the dialog box is too lengthy for the LCD display, the text will scroll automatically after 3 seconds. The text can also be scrolled manually via the V-Pots or Jog Wheel.
When the file selector box appears on the computer monitor, the Logic Control LCD will update accordingly.
Detailed Parameter Information
While using a Logic Control fader, V-Pot or button, detailed parameter information is briefly displayed. The upper row of the LCD displays the full parameter name, and the lower row shows the parameter value.
Both options can be activated or deactivated independently.
The amount of time that parameter values are temporarily displayed on the lower row can be adjusted.
This display timing can be independently activated/deactivated for volume changes and track selection.
If several parameters are simultaneously modified, the respective parameter values can be displayed together or in an alternating fashion.
User-Definable Assignments
All functions discussed above are preset assignments. In coming Logic version you will be able to change these assignments completely, if desired. All buttons, V-Pots and faders can be freely changed. Currently, the following functions can be assigned via a simple drag-and-drop process in the Controller Assignments window:
Track parameters: volume, pan, solo, mute, all EQ parameters, send parameters. The assigned track can be:
The selected track
A fixed track or
The n-track (e.g. the third or the fourth) of a Fader Bank.
Key Commands: Where a key/button features its own LED and the assigned Key Command turns a function on/off, the current function status will automatically be reflected by the respective LED.
Further assignments, more modes and their switches can be manually edited and defined by advanced users in the Controller Assignments Window.
The "Rebuild Defaults" function generates/resets all user-defined Controller Assignments to their default assignments.
