I bought this as an accompanying device to multitrack some guitar-based music. . then play along with my own rythm and basslines. . . Anyway, the "manual schmanual" marketing mantra for this device blows. . . Unless "manual schmanual" really ment "don't bother with the manual because it's not very helpful". . Although, compared to other Roland products I have bought the manual is about average. . .

Beyond some start-up pain I had, you can diddle around with the functions and get the jist pretty quickly. . . It took me about an hour to figure enough out to record some music. The drum machine portion of the unit is very terse. . Although if you've ever used a Roland drum machine most of the features will be famaliar. . . For my first go I simply wanted to pick and 8-bar pattern and repeat (like every other drum machine I have owned). . . . No go. . patterns only play once. . so you need to use the "Arrange" function and setup a song. . . also terse - manual no help here - but you will figure it out after a little fiddling with the function. . .

Also, they crammed a lot of stuff behind the "utility" function. . so be prepared to dig a little for some of the stuff. . . But, above and beyond the moderate start-up pain, the unit relly shines in the sound department. . .

The preset percussion patterns are very usable right out of the box, and the sounds are stellar. . . The COSM guitar effect are great. . (I've got an old Roland RP-1000 rack mount COSM modeling effects box and a GT-5 floor unit. . and every few years I buy a new unit for the updated sounds - I don't have time or talent to program them myself. . Anyway, I was not disappointed here. . great sounds and some great bass simulation patches. . . . )

Recording is very easy, simply pick a track and hit record. . minor complaint - the unit defaults to the end of the recording so you always need to hit the "zero" button to start at the beginning of the song. . The mixdown and mastering tool is very easy. . and if you hate the mixdown starting over is simple. . You don't lose the raw data. Speaking of which, the (very quiet) 60gb hard disk provides 60 hours of uncompressed recording time - although I'm not sure if that's one track or eight.

Haven't figured out the virtual tracks yet. . played with the concept for a few minutes. . this will take more experimentation - manual also not terribly helpful here. . . Also, haven't tried to use the CD yet. . but the manual is ok here and the functions look fairly straight-forward. .

Final word. . Aside from the pejoritive documentation issues, this unit is really great - especially for the casual hobbiest - After coming up to speed after a one-hour learning curve session - I could put together a multitrack "song" (that's what the unit calls em', not me) very quickly. . . Also made two takes (on two adjacent tracks) at a 16-bar solo. . and very easily cut and pasted a from each to bulid a really good solo - (my wife actually listened to the entire thing). . Anyway, for what it's worth I'm inclined to give this an 8 out of 10. . . Hope this was helpful. .

BOSS BR-1180 Recording Studio: BR-1180: a good machine for this novice

I am a long time "serious amateur" musician and singer, who is not a recording engineer at all. I have always wanted to be able to do good quality recordings of multiple tracks with ac. & elec. guitar, bass, and dubbed vocals, and have a decent sounding drum track with it. I have used some cheap 4 track cassette type machines and felt like they were little more than toys, but have been unable to afford a machine with the capabilities of the 1180, even if I had been able to learn to use it.

The BR-1180 fits this bill very nicely. I was able to navigate my way around pretty easily in laying down a drum and bass track, and some vocals. I am now trying to figure out how to mix down and eventually burn to a CD, and it seems pretty straightforward. The recording quality is quite good.

For a musician who likes to work independently and has for years wanted a machine that can do this, this is a dream come true. It certainly is not the best pro level machine, but for a musician who wants to learn with a digital hard disk system, at a thousand bucks, this is a fantastic moment in history

So much for instant gratification. . . . I did get the great guitar sounds and the drums sound quite good. . . . . . But. . . . Writing and arranging songs and new drum patterns is a major pain. . . I'm not well versed with the Roland drum machine culture so the manual ended up on the floor, the section on arranging and such is very frustrating, so much so that I will use my Alesis for the drum tracks. I will admit to this being my first digital recorder after years of tape of all sizes, initially the unit has all the potential to be a handy and nice sounding notepad for advanced ideas, but someone had better go and have a word with whomever writes the manuals, as the one provided is lacking to say the least. Doesn't make first time users like myself very pleased with the product

This is newly purchased for our studio and it is very user friendly piece of equipment. So far it has been relatively easy to use
